It's that time of year again. School is quickly approaching and everything seems to be happening all at once. I wonder if the creators of the Booktube-A-Thon thought about that before they decided to choose their dates. Either way, it's time for the annual Booktube-A-Thon. I've decided to take part in it this year, contrary to everything I've just said above. Read-A-Thons really stress me out, ESPECIALLY this time of year. But hey… I'm always up for a challenge. Especially if they involve reading.
Here are the official 2015 challenges:
1// Read a book with blue on the cover
2// Read a book by an author who shares the same first letter of your last name
3// Read someone else's favorite book
4// Read the last book you acquired
5// Finish a book without letting go of it
6// Read a book you really want to read
7// Read seven books
Now that you know the challenges, I'm going to tell you what I plan on reading.
Here's a picture from my journal where I doodled about it a lil bit:
1// Read a book with blue of the cover
I chose The Lovely Bones by Alice Sebold. Clearly it has blue on the cover, and I've been wanting to read it for a while.
Here's the plot:
The Lovely Bones is the story of a family devastated by a gruesome murder -- a murder recounted by the teenage victim. Upsetting, you say? Remarkably, first-time novelist Alice Sebold takes this difficult material and delivers a compelling and accomplished exploration of a fractured family's need for peace and closure.
The details of the crime are laid out in the first few pages: from her vantage point in heaven, Susie Salmon describes how she was confronted by the murderer one December afternoon on her way home from school. Lured into an underground hiding place, she was raped and killed. But what the reader knows, her family does not. Anxiously, we keep vigil with Susie, aching for her grieving family, desperate for the killer to be found and punished.
Sebold creates a heaven that's calm and comforting, a place whose residents can have whatever they enjoyed when they were alive -- and then some. But Susie isn't ready to release her hold on life just yet, and she intensely watches her family and friends as they struggle to cope with a reality in which she is no longer a part. To her great credit, Sebold has shaped one of the most loving and sympathetic fathers in contemporary literature.

2// Read a book by an author who shares the same first letter of your last name
3// Read someone else's favorite book
I chose Out of Reach by Carrie Arcos because it's my best friend Ella's favorite book. I really don't know anything about it so I will attach the summary below. This is the book I'm looking least forward too (no offense Ella!) The point of a read-a-thon to me is to lessen your tbr list so I don't see the point of adding a book I had no intention of reading.
Here's the summary:
How do you find someone who doesn’t want to be found? A girl searches for her missing addict brother while confronting her own secrets in this darkly lyrical novel.
Rachel has always idolized her older brother Micah. He struggles with addiction, but she tells herself that he’s in control. And she almost believes it. Until the night that Micah doesn’t come home.
Rachel’s terrified—and she can’t help but feel responsible. She should have listened when Micah tried to confide in her. And she only feels more guilt when she receives an anonymous note telling her that Micah is nearby and in danger.
With nothing more to go on than hope and a slim lead, Rachel and Micah’s best friend, Tyler, begin the search. Along the way, Rachel will be forced to confront her own dark secrets, her growing attraction to Tyler…and the possibility that Micah may never come home.

4// Read the last book you acquired
I chose Even when You Lie to Me by Jessica Alcott. As of right now, this is the last book I have acquired. I'm actually super excited about this one. I picked this book up at the famous Strand Book Store in New York City.
Here's the summary:
Charlie, a senior, isn't looking forward to her last year of high school. Another year of living in the shadow of her best friend, Lila. Another year of hiding behind the covers of her favorite novels. Another year of navigating her tense relationship with her perfectionist mom.
But everything changes when she meets her new English teacher. Mr. Drummond is smart. Irreverent. Funny. Hot. Everyone loves him. And Charlie thinks he's the only one who gets her.
She also thinks she might not be the only one with a crush.
In this stunning debut, Jessica Alcott explores relationships-and their boundaries-in a way that is both searingly honest and sympathetic
5// Finish a book without letting go of it
I chose Anthem by Ayn Rand. This is actually my summer reading book for school that I have yet to read. It's only 80 pages and has huge font. I feel like I could easily do this one, but at the same time I don't want to rush my school book since I have a test over it. We'll see how that goes I guess.
Here's the summary:
Anthem has long been hailed as one of Ayn Rand's classic novels, and a clear predecessor to her later masterpieces, The Fountainhead andAtlas Shrugged. In Anthem, Rand examines a frightening future in which individuals have no name, no independence, and no values. Equality 7-2521 lives in the dark ages of the future where all decisions are made by committee, all people live in collectives, and all traces of individualism have been wiped out. Despite such a restrictive environment, the spark of individual thought and freedom still burns in him--a passion which he has been taught to call sinful. In a purely egalitarian world, Equality 7-2521 dares to stand apart from the herd--to think and choose for himself, to discover electricity, and to love the woman of his choice. Now he has been marked for death for committing the ultimate sin. In a world where the great "we" reign supreme, he has rediscovered the lost and holy word--"I."
6// Read a book you really want to read
I chose Undiscovered Gyrl by Allison Burnett. I actually just ordered this on amazon and I'm hoping it will get here on time. I've been wanting to read this book ever since I saw the movie Ask Me Anything (which is the adaption but it has a different name). It's actually about a girl with a blog haha… Also, I absolutely love the cover of this book!!
Here's the summary:
Only on the internet can you have so many friends and be so lonely.
Beautiful, wild, funny, and lost, Katie Kampenfelt is taking a year off before college to find her passion. Ambitious in her own way, Katie intends to do more than just smoke weed with her boyfriend, Rory, and work at the bookstore. She plans to seduce Dan, a thirty-two-year-old film professor.
Katie chronicles her adventures in an anonymous blog, telling strangers her innermost desires, shames, and thrills. But when Dan stops taking her calls, when her alcoholic father suffers a terrible fall, and when she finds herself drawn into a dangerous new relationship, Katie's fearless narrative begins to crack, and dark pieces of her past emerge.
Sexually frank, often heartbreaking, and bursting with devilish humor,Undiscovered Gyrl is an extraordinarily accomplished novel of identity, voyeurism, and deceit.
7// Read seven books
Well… I don't have a seventh book picked out. I honestly doubt I will get through all of these. But if I somehow do, I will just pick one off my shelf that I already own. The week of the read-a-thon (Aug3-9) is VERY busy for me. I'm excited to see how this plays out. How many books do you think I can read? Are you taking part in the 2015 Booktube-a-Thon? If so, tell me what books you plan on reading in the comments!
Yours Truly,
Marisa Thoman
